> Dear All,

> Next week in the seminar series, we will welcome Prof. Jonathan Rhodes hosted by the ESS group:
>
> “Ecosystem Services in a Spatially Structured and Connected World”
>
> Zoom, 1pm Weds 19th May
>
> Most ecosystem services that underpin human well-being are produced and consumed in landscapes that are spatially complex. How these landscapes are structured has major implications for the benefits generated by ecosystem services and how landscapes should be managed for sustainability. Further, broad scale flows of ecosystems services (e.g. through trade) drive massive redistribution of ecosystem services at global scales and this interacts with processes operate at landscape scales. Sustainable solutions therefore require ecosystem service assessments that better integrate flows of ecosystem services occurring at both landscape and global scales. In this seminar I will highlight the implications of our recent conceptual, modelling and empirical work on the role of landscape structure for ecosystem services and landscape management. I will then discuss the work we are just starting that aims to better understand how broad scale flows of ecosystem services interact with landscape change to drive trade-offs at global and landscape scales.

> Bio: Jonathan is a landscape ecologist working at the interface between ecology and policy to improve and better understand decision-making for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services. He is currently an Australian Research Council Future Fellow based at The University of Queensland. He has a particular interest in understanding how dynamic landscape and climate change drives biodiversity and ecosystem services outcomes, and the implications of this for effective environmental decision-making and policy setting, particularly under uncertainty. He is also interested in optimal monitoring and the value of learning and research for improved environmental decision-making.
