> Abstract
> Angiosperm diversification has long been hypothesised to have been accelerated by the interaction of pollinators with flowers, implying a potential role for pollinator-driven ecological speciation. Evolutionary radiations in general are thought to require both ecological opportunity and the genetic capactiy to adapt. Presenting a case study in sexually deceptive Ophrys orchids, which sport highly specific plant-pollinator interactions, I shall examine both ecological and genetic aspects that likely facilitate speciation in this plant group. In so doing, I will also discuss some practical challenges facing researchers when moving towards speciation genomics in non-model plants with large and heterozygous genomes. In this context, we shall get a first glimpse into the Ophrys genome, assembled using different short and long-read technologies.
