> Abstract:
> The purported strong declines of the number of insect individuals has been making alarming headlines around the world for over two years. Interesting is that most of the popular media articles were based on either single case studies or biased attempts at synthesis. To test how widespread such declines are, and when and where they occur, my colleagues and I have been working on an evidence synthesis of all openly available data on monitored insect assemblages we could find. Our results revealed considerable variation in trends across the world, even among adjacent sites: at some sites insect abundances decreased, at other sites they increases and at many sites there were no changes. Nevertheless, when combining all data into one model, we found on average declines of terrestrial insect abundances of 9% per year, but increases for freshwater insects of about 11% per year. Both the declines and increases were most evident in the temperate zone and in Mediterranean climates, whereas in most other parts of the world insufficient evidence was available to discern a trend. We found few relations with global change drivers, such as land-use and climate change.
> Our research was picked up well by the media, so I will discuss the headlines reporting on our work, to see if our more nuanced results have changed public perception. The media attention also generated some interesting comments and personal interactions with lay people, about which I will share some anecdotes.
