[Mitarbeiter.zoologie] Lab meeting tomorrow, Wednesday 08:30

Dear all,

I hope you that are all doing well amidst all this chaos!

It is perhaps not my place to give an opinion as I am not currently an active member of the group, but I thought this study might be useful in helping you decide whether to hold an in-person or a virtual meeting: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

According to these simulations, as well as what is actually happening in France and Italy, every interaction can have ripple effects, and the best way to limit the exponential spread of the virus among the population is to practice social isolation now (even one day can make a difference).

In order to protect those most vulnerable, which not only includes the upper age groups of our society, but also all those with compromised immune systems or even asthma (and therefore, overall, quite a large amount of people), I believe we must do all in our power to participate in the collective effort of limiting the spread. Furthermore, if we all take measures now, we can hopefully avoid the overcrowding of hospitals as is seen now in France and Italy, and which would concern all of us, should any of us require hospitalisation during this global health crisis.

As you all know, even those without symptoms can be carriers and spread the virus without knowing it.

Based on this, I would suggest that Skype (or any equivalent) is the way to go (but as I said, it is perhaps not my place to say so, and this is your decision to make).

Take good care everyone,

All the best,

Alice

dear delphine,

i understand your concern (and i share it. i am working from home), but it is not about instructions that robert should give, it is about how we, as lab, think it is best to proceed, in the short and not so short term. something that should emerge from a discussion. given this premise, i can think of two solutions:

1) we meet tomorrow as robert suggested and keep distance
2) we all have a skype conference

i personally think that the first options is feasible, if we are responsible and take all possible precautions. if the second is technically easy to implement, i am personally also happy with the second. any other opinion?

thanks delphine for raising the issue

antonella

Dear Robert,

Given the seriousness of the situation and the clear instructions given by most European governments, it doesn't seem wise to meet in person. Could you instead give us instructions by email, or organise a skype meeting?

Kindest regards, Delphine

Dear All,

With the growing concern over COVID-19, I hereby call a lab meeting tomorrow at 08:30 to discuss how we proceed in the lab and office. This replaces any other lab meeting which I had previously announced. If you are not feeling well, do not attend.

All BSc and MSc students should not attend because they have already been informed that tuition is suspended, including all project work, to minimise the risk of viral spread.

Yours,

Robert
