> Three (3) postdoctoral positions in ‘Biodiversity Synthesis’ at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig.
>
> The positions can start immediately, but preferably no later than January 2021. Note, the positions are currently limited until September 30, 2021 owing to the DFG funding cycle. However, pending the successful renewal of iDiv, the positions are renewable and can last as long as four (4) years total.

> We are looking for motivated and independent scientists for positions based in the ‘Biodiversity Synthesis’ research group of Prof. Jonathan Chase, at iDiv in Leipzig Germany. iDiv is a consortium of scientists from several universities and research institutes interested in integration within the biodiversity sciences. Postdocs in the Biodiversity Synthesis group are strongly encouraged to develop research projects in collaboration with Prof. Chase and team members, with other members of the iDiv consortium, with visiting sDiv synthesis groups, and with outside networks of collaborators. See here for examples <https://www.idiv.de/en/groups_and_people/core_groups/synthesis.html> of ongoing research projects, collaborations and recent publications. Research topics are flexible, and can range from explorations of metacommunity ecology and community assembly (including influences on ecosystem functions); macroecological process and pattern; and aspects of biodiversity change in time and space. An overarching theme in the research group is combining concepts, theory (both simulation and analytical), and data synthesis to more deeply understand fundamental and applied aspects of biodiversity science. Study systems are open, but candidates are encouraged to build on work already being done in the group, while contributing expanding or complementary analyses and approaches.
>
> In addition to collaborations within the iDiv consortium, substantial opportunities exist to collaborate with international networks of collaborators already established, such as the sChange and sTurn working groups of the sDiv synthesis centre, and the Measurements of Biodiversity (MoB) working group. One or more of the positions will be filled by candidates with strong computational skills and approaches (or an interesting in developing those skills), and will contribute to our broader goals of creating a more streamlined, open and transparent pipeline for biodiversity research from data compilation to database structure to analysis and interpretation. Our group is committed to FAIR and open science in both data and code. Furthermore, one of these positions will have the opportunity to work closely with colleagues in the UK (Dornelas, Schrodt, Martins), and their synthesis working group, to integrates aspects of traits into analyses of biodiversity change through time (via BioTime and related databases).
>
> In addition to research outputs, candidates will have the opportunity to learn new skills via a number of in-house and consortium-wide workshops; to interact and collaborate with networks of diverse scientists via the iDiv consortium and the sDiv synthesis centre; to teach and mentor junior scientists; and to be part of an community of colleagues passionate about integrative biodiversity research. International candidates will be provided substantial assistance during the move and setup in Germany (e.g., acquiring visas, lodging, etc). Knowledge of German is useful, but not necessary for living in Leipzig, and there are substantial opportunities for work-life balance.
>
> To apply, please: (1) send a letter of motivation (1-2 pages) including possible projects that you would like to lead and how they connect to the ongoing work in the Biodiversity Synthesis research group and its network of collaborations within the iDiv consortium internationally. Preference will be given to candidates who have carefully considered ongoing efforts within the group, and have developed ideas that complement and extend those efforts (please also make a note if you’re specifically interested in the synthesis project integrating trait analyses into biodiversity time series); (2) a Curriculum Vitae; (3) the names and contact information of two scientists who could serve as possible letter writers.

> Applications should be submitted in English with registration number 4-6242/20-D by June 30, 2020 via our application portal https://apply.idiv.de <https://apply.idiv.de/>.
