> Environmental change can affect ecosystem function directly, or indirectly by altering biodiversity. Which of these effects is more important? I will present general theory and data of algae communities showing that direct effects on function can outweigh biodiversity-mediated effects on function. I will also present a strategy to mechanistically study environmental change effects on biodiversity and function, based on an integration of stressors into resource uptake theory.
