> The structure and dynamics of ecological systems emerges from the behaviour of individual organisms and their interactions with each other and their abiotic environment. This does not necessarily imply that all ecological theory and application has to go all the way down to the individual, but it means that it cannot be excluded from the outset that individuals matter. I will summarize arguments and examples (e.g., vultures, tigers, honeybees, grasslands) for including the individual-based perspective into ecology and biodiversity research. I will demonstrate how this perspective can be implemented using individual/agent-based models and how this approach matured over the last decade. Finally, I will argue that ecological theories need to be cross-level by taking into account the mutual link between the individual’s and the system’s perspective.
