Hi all

Just in addition to what I mentioned in the labmeeting.

The DAAD offers funding for PhD students and PhDs / Academics to go to
conference. You have to register here:
https://portal.daad.de/irj/portal and go to "Personenförderung". At
some point you have to choose the fundingtype (Kongressreisen) and the
country/time. THen you are presented a link with a PDF-form to download
, fill-in and reupload. This is the general DAAD application form. Then
you can upload your other required forms and data (all needs to be PDF).

What do you need: check
https://www.daad.de/ausland/studieren/stipendium/de/70-stipendien-finden-und-bewerben/?status=&target=&subjectGrps=&daad=&q=kongressreisen&page=1&detail=57369745

among others you need to DL/fillin the Kongressreisen-PDFform, write a
motivation letter and statement about (lack of) thirdparty funding,
screenshots from the conference website (dates, fees) and proof of your
talk/poster contribution (some of this can be uploaded later). PhD
students need a letter of support from their supervisor as well.
If you have your typical documents/CV-data etc on hand, the application
doesn't take very long and offers a very good chance to get some funding
(and therefore help the lab's budget as well). Its worth a try.

As mentioned, the DFG recently funded 4 NGS centers across Germany. A
second, related call, was just announced. Its for "sequencing projects"
of middle-large size (>100k €). To go for it, they need a letter of
intent until 8.5.2018. Deadline for the proposal is 11.July 2018 (your
registration at the DFG online Portal needs to be completed latest
4.7.2018). Funding seems to be for "regular" projects, except that you
state sequencing "costs" separately in the costings. Sequencing is
supposed to be undertaken in the new NGS centers which directly bill the
costs to the DFG. I think its a nice opportunity for any sequencing
heavy project.
