Hi,
I Just learned from the notes on the pathogen meeting that you discussed purchasing a biorender licence. Just FYI,
here is an excerpt of an email that my PI recently circulated in our group at the FU Berlin:

"Dear all,

I strongly discourage you from using BioRender in the future. They have a ridiculous licensing policy. Even with the paid license (!),
all figures you create are owned by BioRender,
you do not have any rights at all to use your figures if not approved by BioRender, meaning you
can only use their figures in publications after their formal approval of each individual figure,
and you still have to add a “Created with BioRender.com”.

Also, they breach European digital rights protection laws, as they inspect and police your files.

Last but not least, you cannot publish your manuscripts Open Access with the common CC BY license if you use BioRender figures – because their license terms make it impossible to put BioRender figures under CC BY. I have heard from a scientist that he was forced by BioRender to issue a correction to one of his papers published in PLOS ONE and to remove his BioRender-generated figures from this paper."

Of course it is still a useful software.

Best,
Lukas

FREIE UNIVERSITÄT BERLIN
Pharmazeutische Biologie / Pharmaceutical Biology
Königin-Luise-Str. 2+4,
D-14195 Berlin
