
<html><head><meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></head><body dir="auto"><div dir="ltr"></div><div dir="ltr">Hello Anna,</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">We discussed the book with couple of other PhD students and we came to the conclusion that we were not happy with it because:</div><div dir="ltr">- the writing style of the book makes it tedious to read</div><div dir="ltr">- the ecological/genetic processes are not explained well</div><div dir="ltr">- the book jumps from topic to topic, the paragraphs are disjointed</div><div dir="ltr">- the notations in the book are confusing</div><div dir="ltr">- there was not enough examples</div><div dir="ltr">- the book notoriously ventures into explaining statistics (e.g. significance testing) which takes away from the main focus (the concept)</div><div dir="ltr">- the book offers detailed explanation of the statistics but in the end there are just one of many different ways how to approach the analysis </div><div dir="ltr">- the mathematical formulas are explained poorly.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">If you (or anyone else) have a different opinion, please voice it. As Antonella pointed out during our discussion, these are difficult topics and there is no book that will make them easy.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">I have started the first chapter of the book that Atilla sent around, and I like the writing and approach of the author much better. However, there are many shortcuts and things to take as a given (especially the maths). That might not be satisfactory to many.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">I would suggest looking into the other books to make an informed decision. If in the end we decide that Hartl's book is the most comprehensive, we can keep reading it.</div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Best wishes,</div><div dir="ltr">Patrycja</div><div dir="ltr"><br><blockquote type="cite">On 17. Nov 2023, at 18:11, Anna Friedel <anna.friedel@student.uni-halle.de> wrote:<br><br></blockquote></div><blockquote type="cite"><div dir="ltr">
