<b class=""><i class="">Disentangling the role of light availability and AM fungi in
shaping plant species composition of European (semi natural)
grasslands</i></b><br class="">
Lena Neuenkamp is a researcher at the lab of Plant Ecology at Tartu
University (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://www.botany.ut.ee/planteco/en/staff/lena_neuenkamp.html">https://www.botany.ut.ee/planteco/en/staff/lena_neuenkamp.html</a>).
Under supervision of Martin Zobel, she finished her PhD studies on
the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal community
structure on plant diversity and composition in semi-natural dry
grasslands in June 2018 (<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://dspace.ut.ee/handle/10062/59635">http://dspace.ut.ee/handle/10062/59635</a>).
Now she continues her work on disentangling the factors shaping the
interaction between plant and AM fungal communities, focusing mostly
on the effect of AM fungal diversity as a driver of plant-plant
competition and the role of changes in carbon limitation due to
altered light conditions. Her talk will illustrate the relationships
between mycorrhizal fungal diversity, plant competition and light
availability using grasslands as a model system.<br class="">
<br class="">
<b class=""><i class="">Moth communities and environmental gradients in the
Anthropocene</i></b><br class="">
Moths (i.e. nocturnal Lepidoptera) comprise a sizeable fraction of
insect biodiversity in most terrestrial ecosystems. Given their high
species richness and abundance, these insects play important roles
in local food webs. Most moth species are herbivores during their
larval stages. The intimacy of their host plant affiliations spans
the whole range from extreme polyphagy to narrow specialism. Despite
their substantial mobility, moth assemblages often mirror
environmental gradients at surprisingly small spatial scales. This,
together with the large body of information on species traits
available for temperate-zone species, makes them an interesting
focal group for the study of multi-species responses to ecological
drivers. In the first part of my talk, I will present selected
results from own work over 20+ years, covering tropical as well as
temperate-zone regions, to explore to what extent local moth
assemblages differ predictably between forest strata, between
land-use types, and along elevational gradients. My emphasis will be
on patterns in species composition rather than species richness. In
the second part, I will briefly illustrate a couple of recent
developments in the Anthropocene using moths as example, like light
pollution, invasive species, biodiversity loss, phenological and
spatial shifts due to climate change, and altered biotic
interactions. I will address how these trends might affect moth
diversity and the functional roles played by these insects in the
future.<b class=""><i class=""><br class="">
